Case study: Photo Restoration | Restoring precious family photographs, from the 1980's

One of the most rewarding aspects of photo restoration is seeing a treasured family memory transformed back to its former glory. Recently, we completed a particularly special restoration project involving two portrait photographs from the 1980's featuring a client's beloved grandparents.
These photographs had been proudly displayed in the family living room for decades and held enormous sentimental value. However, like many colour photographs from that era, time had not been kind to them.
Initial telephone chat
When clients contact us about photo restoration, it's usually telephone consultation. During this conversation, Kirsty tries to gather as much information as possible about the condition of the photograph(s), and the work that may be required. This allows her to 1: gauge how much time to book the client in for, and 2: prepare relevant examples / samples ahead of the client's studio appointment.
During this particular phone call, the client explained that the photographs were old, a bit faded, but he felt that the colours still looked fairly normal.
However, when the photographs arrived in the studio, the reality was quite different!
Why severe discolouration often goes unnoticed
Both photographs had suffered from significant colour fading, orange speckles, and had developed a strong purple colour cast throughout the image.
This is actually far more common than many people realise.
Because the discolouration happens gradually over many years, our eyes and brains slowly adapt to the change. When we see the same photograph every day, the altered colours become our "normal." By the time clients bring photographs to us, they are often surprised when we compare them to correctly restored versions and point out just how far the colours have drifted from the originals.
In this case, the purple discolouration was severe, affecting skin tones, clothing and background colours throughout both portraits.
More than colour restoration
While restoring the original colours was a major part of the project, there were also composition issues that needed addressing too.
The portraits were intended to hang side-by-side as a set, yet the original photographs were noticeably unbalanced.
Grandad's portrait had been cropped extremely tightly, with very little breathing space above his head. In fact, the top of his head was almost cut off entirely. His portrait was also significantly more zoomed in than Grandma's, making the pair feel mismatched when viewed together.
Grandma's portrait presented its own challenges. The photograph was slightly leaning, and her face sat off-centre within the frame.
Knowing that the restored portraits would once again take pride of place together in the family living room, achieving visual balance between the two images was incredibly important.
Restoring balance and harmony
Kirsty, our image restoration specialist, carefully planned the restoration process to ensure the portraits would work beautifully as a pair.
Using advanced restoration techniques, she corrected the alignment issues, straightened Grandma's portrait and adjusted the composition of both images so they felt naturally balanced when displayed side-by-side.
Creating harmony between the two photographs was just as important as restoring their colours. The goal was to ensure that neither portrait visually dominated the other and that both grandparents were represented equally within the finished display.
Recreating the original colours
One of the biggest challenges with restoring heavily faded / discoloured photographs is determining what the original colours would have been.
Fortunately, our client was able to provide an invaluable piece of information. He clearly remembered the original colour of the curtains visible in the background of the photographs. This detail became an important reference point for Kirsty and helped guide the colour restoration process across the entire image.
By combining the client's memories with years of restoration expertise, it was possible to rebuild natural skin tones, restore realistic clothing colours and remove the heavy purple cast that had developed over time.
Four weeks of careful restoration
In total, this restoration process took four weeks.
Every stage was completed with careful attention to detail, from colour correction and retouching through to composition adjustments and final preparation for display.
The finished portraits now look balanced, natural and vibrant once again, while still preserving the character and authenticity of the original photographs.
Most importantly, these treasured images of the client's grandparents can continue to take pride of place in the family home for many years to come.
